ZIROBWE DEMONSTRATION FARM LTD
Zirobwe Demonstration Farm is located at Zirobwe, Luwero District, 29 miles from Kampala on Gayaza Zirobwe. The farm started as a family business in 2008 in Najjera, Kira Town Council as a poultry and fishing project on a small scale. Two years later, the directors purchased land in Zirobwe in Luweero district where they ventured into piggery, dairy cattle keeping, and cereals, banana growing. The farm currently occupies 350 acres of land with 200 dairy cattle, over 700 pigs, together with land occupied by crops like cassava, maize and other seasonal crops. The facilities at the farm presently can accommodate 450 exotic dairy cows, 2000 pigs and some 100 acres of land available for cereal farming.
Zirobwe Demonstration Farm accessed an SME Agricultural loan of Shs. 400,000,000 and is repaying it very well. The loan had a great positive impact on the operations of the farm.
The farm has been connected by MSC to another pig farmer (AQU Estates) and learnt how to modernize the piggery like installing the automatic drinker and feed mixing ratios for different ages.
RONO FARM LTD
Rono Farm is located in Mityana district and started as a small poultry project by Mr and Mrs Norbert Semitala with 700 birds in 2004. In 2009, the farm was incorporated as Rono Farm Ltd and has been in active business for 10 years now. Rono farm majorly deals in poutry farming and its main source of revenue is through sale of eggs. The farm also generates revenue through the sale of off layers.
In April this year, Rano Farm Ltd accessed a loan of 200 million from MSC to purchase a 10 ton truck transport eggs to the markets, stock 1 day old chicks and purchase chicken feeds. Before accessing MSC the agricultural loan, the poultry farm had 20,000 birds and was producing 375 trays of eggs per day. The company had also imported 8 cages for the birds but lacked the capacity to stock all of them. The farm did not have a van to transport the eggs to the market and the feeds were not sufficient at the farm.
With MSC financial support, the Rono farm has realized growth in the number of birds from 20,000 to 30,000. All the 8 cages at the farm are fully stocked with birds and the farm has sufficient chicken feed. The egg sales have increased from 375 trays per day to 648 trays per day. The company expects the production of eggs to increase to 750 trays of eggs per day. The farm supplies eggs to supermarkets around Kampala and the local market in Mityana district. Currently 27 people are employed on the farm.
The company has also benefited from technical support from MSC in cash flow preparation, record management and minute writing.
